Alone

This one is more of a narrative and descriptive combined. Was looking for more descriptive but I'm a fluff kind of person, and I needed a happy ending. The topic given to me was  : Describe the surroundings and your emotions at a time when you felt very alone.

I looked around, searching frantically. The airport was full of sweaty, bustling people, but in their chaotic midst, I felt so utterly alone, so painstakingly boxed in from their world. My heartbeat was too fast, racing yet so slow, creeping and silent, that ultimately, it levelled to an awkward pace that I was nowhere near comfortable with. Sweat beaded on my forehead, desperately clinging to the blotchy skin above my eyebrows. The crowd walked right past me, pushing and shoving in a rhythmic patter, not bothering to notice my face, the tears stinging in my eyes, threatening to spill. I slid to the floor, head in my hands. How could I be this stupid? I had known this would happen. I had known that I would be let down. I had known he wouldn’t come.
But I didn’t know what to feel. Everything was so disturbingly normal, so disgustingly in sync, that I felt so annoyed, so nauseated with the fact the rest of the world could go on, keep moving, while mine felt like it was going for a toss, crumbling below me.
I stared at my watch, compelling time to slow down, to give him a chance. After what must’ve been ages, I wiped my tears and tried to stand. My knees buckled, facing, for the first time, the reality of being truly alone. I muffled a sob. I would not let grief overtake me, not here. I looked down at the floor, counted to 10 and found the strength to stand, starting to move.
As I drifted about, aimlessly, I could hear him calling out to me, screaming my name, his voice coarse with desperation. I shut it all out, and continued to walk. They had lied. He wasn’t coming back. He told me he’d be safe, but he lied. This too was a lie. Just another heartless person, playing with me. And I would have to deal with it. Alone.
I felt a firm yet familiar grip on my shoulder, shaking me out of my bitter thoughts. I turned around and nothing could have prepared me for that moment. Recognising the face, I gasped, my body suddenly going rigid with shock. It couldn’t be.
His blue eyes shone with tears. He looked so different, like he has seen the bad of the world. His soft, ruffled hair was buzzed short , the length of his arms filled with morbid tattoos. The melancholy gray and army green didn’t suit him, it made his bright spirit look dull.
Suddenly, all the things I had wanted to tell him disappeared. All the things I had dreamt of doing when this moment came, vanished. I now only needed reality. My breath caught, and I softly whispered “Dad?”, questions nearly bursting through the seams of my mind. He smiled knowingly, and soon enough, I was blubbering like an idiot, right there in the middle of the airport terminal. He put his bags down, and looked at me, as if he never believed he’d see me again either. I flew into his arms, tears soaking his shirt, my fingers fisting for whatever they could hold on to. He kissed my hair, quietly muttering, just loud enough for the both of us to hear, “Oh, pumpkin. We’re gonna be alright. We’re gonna be just fine. I promise you.” I nodded furiously, all grief and bitterness leaving me, escaping my thoughts. We both stood there, seeking comfort in each other’s arms with the realisation that we were not alone. And that, was enough.

Mesmerized

This piece is a descriptive writing piece. They, most of the time, don't really have a story. Which is kind of crazy, considering I'm still calling them stories. Anyway. Getting off topic. What I mean is, they're descriptions. They just focus on the current scene and that's all. So the lack of a storyline, in this case, is, funnily enough, expected. They're basically meant to take you to that time and place, in the character's POV. Here goes nothing...

Bubbles surrounded the crowd, softly popping as they grew tired, round and glistening in the sun. The trees swayed with the wind, ruffling, the leaves whispering my name against the velvet cherry blossoms, the sweet smell of the nectar intruding my senses amongst all others. The incessant chattering was mute to my ears, the shuffling motion around me in frames and the hot, dazzling sun shining down upon me, illuminating all. My heart was beating hard against my chest, such peace that it was, in contrast, getting harder and harder to breathe. I twirled slowly, again and again, taking everything in, mesmerized.

Central Park was beautiful. None of the pictures did it any justice, glorifying the bustling coffee shops and sweaty joggers instead. That, of course, was an alternate world of its own.  But the  orange sun, tainting the red-pink sky was besting all of it, and for a scrawny, thin little girl from India, it was enough to take my breath away.
Never before had I seen such serenity, such synchronisation. Never before had I found the steady beating of the wind, cold in my face, so harmoniously in tandem with the gurgling of the river, making me feel all warm inside. Never before had I seen such perfection. Enthralled, I stood there, frozen- flushed and amazed.

My parents stared at me, puzzled and confounded.  Here, a whole kingdom of green, soft grass with little pathways and streams. A whole playground! Enough space to run around and play to my heart’s content. But there I was, mouth agape, eyes wide, body twirling, mind running. They probably thought that I was still coping from leaving India, leaving home. But they were wrong. That kicked in later.  For now, I was amazed and excited. I was free. And at that moment, I knew, that I would remember everything, all down to the last detail, forever mesmerized.
THE END.

Little Johnny and the Alphabet Song

We had to write a story on the topic : Write a story where the character has to overcome a difficulty. This story, is a little childish, but I was longing for a change. So, here goes...

Our story takes place in Boston, USA where a young, 5 year old boy with rosy , dimpled cheeks, sparkling blue eyes and a talent for music named Johnny is having trouble with his ABC’s.

It was the first day of school. Ms. Mary , their auburn haired teacher, was teaching the kids their alphabets. “You are now all big girls and boys and you need to know your alphabets”, she had told them. Little Johnny looked at the boring symbols that stared back at him from the blackboard and sighed. They were very difficult, and very boring. He looked around him. He noticed that all of his classmates were able to understand and figure out the pattern of these letters.

He saw that Marty, his best friend, was doing just fine. And all the yucky girls too. And, they all wanted to do this. But not Johnny. All he wanted to do was sing. Sing, and dance to his heart’s content. And, sitting in class, he couldn’t. He didn’t want to go to Mrs. Cromwell, the scary principal after all, now did he? Johnny tried to pay attention. But, he just kept humming a song that he had heard on TV.

Suddenly, Ms Mary announced that there would be a test the coming Friday.

Johnny glanced at the board once more. He remembered that his mother had told him that if you look at something long enough you will remember it , because you have a camera memory. Or some big word meaning something like that. Johnny stared at the board for a while. He, in fact glanced at it all recess long. Johnny shut his eyes. Blank. He opened them. He thought “ maybe I need to ‘click”. So Johnny looked at the board once more and said “Click”. He closed his eyes. Blank. Soon enough, Little Johnny realised that he had the memory, just no film. He reminded himself to ask Mother to buy some at the dollar store this evening. He sighed once more. How in the world was he going to remember this in time for the test?

Johnny went home every day after that, trying to recall what exactly had been taught to him. He tried, yes he did, oh so hard. He tried to remember what came after M and before C but he failed at doing so. He simply could not remember.

On the day before the test, Johnny got so frustrated with the letters peering back at him that he started to cry. Not just cry. Cry, and wail and mope about. So, when Papa came home from work, he decided that he was going to help Johnny. He sat him down, on his knee, hugged him tight and said “ Johnny, what is the matter, slugger? “ “Papa, I can’t remember my ABC’s ! I’ve tried so hard!” And Johnny burst into tears again. “ So, why don’t you make a song about it? You’re such a great singer!”

Johnny’s face brightened and he jumped off his father’s knee to go running to the piano. Throughout, Johnny created and rehearsed his new song.

The next day, while answering the test, Johnny quietly sang to himself and he finished before any other child in his class.

When Johnny got his test back on Monday, he was very proud. He had aced the test. When his father came home that evening, he showed it to him. His father beamed happily.

And that, folks, is how Little Johnny learned his alphabets...

Internet and Communication

Here we had to write an argumentative essay on the topic : The existence of the Internet means that we can now communicate more easily than ever before. This can only be good. Do you agree?

In 1971, the army of the United States of America created one of the most useful technologies of our time.... The Internet. It was first known as the ARPANET ( Advanced Research Project Agency NETwork) and was used for communication between 2 ends of the US. In the very same year, a man named Ray Tomlinson sent the first ever email using this network. Slowly, the ARPANET became bigger, expanding to more offices and homes. Within a couple of years, in the 1980’s, discoveries like emoticons and online chat developed. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist, wrote the HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol), a language that enabled computers to communicate hypertext documents over the internet, thus expanding the network globally.

Thanks to the Internet, communication has become faster and easier than ever before. People from different ‘corners’ of the globe can now talk, as if face-to-face. A quick email or a ‘HRU’ now does it. The internet has helped us to develop, and be open minded to several other cultures. We know what is going on in people’s lives within a short span of time thanks to social networking sites. Contacting someone doesn’t cost us much money, so we take advantage of how much we can really ‘communicate’. We are part of an international community. But, does all this ‘quick and easy communication’ really benefit us?

Although, the Net is extremely useful, there are some downsides to it. First of all, the internet allows for a range of crimes that actually were harder to commit before. Crimes such as identity theft have been so much easier, as no one is actually checking for ID proof, to see if you are actually the one communicating, and interacting on the Net. Also, due to increased internet use, we have undermined the value of face-to-face conversation of actual human contact at all. And, what about writing? The whole beauty of penmanship has completely disappeared. I wish I could experience stories I have heard from my elders about writing letters – staying up till 3 am just writing them, waiting eagerly for days for a new letter and the joy of opening a letter sent by a loved one.

Sure, it is agreed, that the Internet has helped us communicate faster and easier. But, the true form of letters has taught patience and joy to those elder to us. As the young generation, I feel, it is our responsibility to take this technology further, but not leave the old one behind. For, as Confucius once said, “Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance”.

A friend

This one is called the A Friend... I wrote this as an asset for an art picture that I clicked.

I am climbing up and up,

Without a place to go,

Not sure if I'll meet my friend,

Or my evil foe.

As I go slowly,

I get very scared,

I think about the possibilities,

That i doubt can be bared.

But I'm sure, all that I know,

That if a begin to fall,

You will be beside me there,

And guide me through it all...

The Lovely Seasons

I did this poem as I wanted to give it in for a school Gazette. It was raining outisde and I decided that the seasons would be what my poem would be about. Note, this poem is according to Indian seasons...

The Lovely Seasons
By: Niketa Nerurkar

First comes winter, coldest of all
When we notice the trees so tall.
The time where the cold wind blows,
The time for a cough or a runny nose.
Where all stay inside for a while,
Not go out for more than a mile.
Where children wear long shirts and pants,
Where people have cold legs and hands.
Then comes summer, the time for sun
The time where you can have some fun.
When the excitement is so very near,
It brings some happiness, it brings some cheer.
When there’s no tension, there’s no school,
Where one can joke or be a fool.
And hard work takes its back seat,
For leisure now cannot be beat.
Then monsoon, the time for rain,
The time where we go fully insane.
And when the monsoon is finally here,
The leaks at home become a fear.
The pitter- patter of the drops,
The back and forth of the mops.
The children splashing all about,
While the adults scream and shout.
And thus I can tell you, all seasons are great,
For all of them have their own fate.

Internet in Globalization

By: Niketa Nerurkar
The Internet has a great deal of importance in Globalization. Let's see how...

-The role of Internet in Globalization is extremely important. The word globalization is to make something be adopted globally. According to me, the Internet has changed the world a lot. I will now explain why…

Communication- The Internet is used as a great means of communication. We can now look at someone who is on the other side of the globe through a webcam within seconds. The world has now gotten smaller due to programs like Skype, Messenger etc. We also now have group social networking sites like Facebook, Orkut and Twitter. This has changed the world drastically as people can communicate from such a long distance. People also transmit data through emails. This is a very popular thing to do. Now, writing a letter is no more important as we use emails. This is because a receiver can get a message within a minute. E-mails are faster, more efficient and can be sent in many quantities.

Entertainment - Many people, across the globe, spend their time on the Internet playing games. They listen to songs, watch videos and download. The Internet has now become famous for downloading programs like Limewire. People across the globe get addicted to games on the net. There are games where you can play against people in another place. This has changed the usage of time in people’s lives.

Politics - Politics has now become a great part of the modern world today. Candidates can campaign with advertisements and websites. This brings awareness to people about the correct leader, party etc. People can also vote online. This makes it easier as some people who might be too busy to go to the polling station. Still, they can sit at one place and vote.

Commerce - The Internet has now brought about means of shopping. Sites like Amazon and EBay now have a virtual shop where people around the globe can buy and sell objects. This is very useful as there is a variety of things t0 choose, from different places. Second-hand objects like CD’s and electronics can also be sold and bought.

Matrimony - Nowadays, many people use the Internet for matrimonies. They find people to spend their lives with from all across the globe of their type, culture, likings etc. This has changed the world as people no more go to one another’s houses.

Messages - The Internet is very useful for spreading messages. For example, many times on a webpage, you will see ads of ways to stop global warming. This for the younger generation is very important as we will be living later on. I think if there is any useful ad on current issues it should be put on popular sites like Yahoo or Naver.
Research – The last but most important is research. Research on the Net is a very important thing in this young generation. Here information, videos, images, essays, news etc. can be found. Nowadays, all projects are done with the help of the Internet. Teachers now give projects and homework that relates to research on the Internet. Many search engines from different countries like Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask and Naver are very useful for quick results of a search. Results from all over the world, in different languages come within a second in front of you. This has changed the world as many people no more go to libraries. They go on the Net.
Thus, the role of the Internet to globalization is like bread is to butter. It is completely essential.
